Made with translucent ceramic, clear braces have an arch wire that runs along your teeth. The strong steel wire pressures the teeth to move to the desired direction through individual brackets attached to each tooth. Those brackets are attached to the teeth by orthodontic bands. Your dentist can also directly bond them to the surface of your teeth. Apart from brackets, your dentist can also use spacers to create a space in between the teeth.
If you are unhappy with your braces looking too metallic, you have the option to get wires that are colored or frosted.
